- Spell check, Word Spelling and Grammar – this is a must.
- Word Thesaurus – use to replace repetitive words or revise and revitalise others.
- Editing tool will assist with vague words to sticky sentences – Try, Pro Writing Aid http://prowritingaid.com/ It’s a FREE editing tool, however it can be purchased and downloaded to Microsoft Word.
- Critique – every story needs this. Find holes in story, sentence structure and basic errors
a) join a writer group
b) or, join Scribophile http://www.scribophile.com/ This site is for writers and authors. Kind of a sharing system. Put your story up to be critiqued and in return, you critique others.
c) Find BETA readers to give feedback. This will help with genre positioning.
Have your manuscript as good as it can be before sending it to a professional editor. They can be costly. You want them to do as little as possible to cut that cost. You only want to do this once.
After author has completed adjustments using the above steps, print off story and read one last time before sending manuscript to a publisher.
