Tender age teaser
Home from school and sick, a child wheezes heavily. Frightened in his bed, the noise comes closer. Sheets are not enough to protect the paralysed state of mind that hears footsteps in the hallway. The door squeaks and he sit up petrified, sweat beads line his lip that is blue from the deep breaths he is unable to take. Bang! The tin roof retracts from the heat of the day. His heart can barely take the strain of this frightening empty home as his tiny feet hit the floor. In the backyard he collapses on the grass, alone in the pollens that make him sicker. He debates returning to his bed, nothing was there, he saw no scary person or ghost but legs heavier than steel stop any movement. At last, he hears his mother’s voice and scrambles to make it back to bed with lungs that now battle for air.
