5 Indie Author TIPS to help your book CLIMB TO SUCCESS
HOW CLOUD RIDERS become No11 on AMAZON – fantasy genre?
1. Start a Blog/Web page.
a) There are many professionals that will help you with a web page. Start off with a blog at least once a week/fortnight. Make sure it is on a subject dear to your heart. Readers like honesty and will want to hear about you and what you like so they can identify with your writings.
2. Join Facebook, Linked In and Twitter.
a) Put up a profile photo of yourself. The picture is a statement of how you would like others to perceive you.
b) Have a short blurb to let others know a little of what you do.
c) Link them up to keep posts to a minimum.
d) Make friends and don’t be afraid to stretch out your arms and invite others into your world. Blog about your writing journey but don’t overdo it. There is a fine line between letting others know what you have to offer and being bothersome.
3. Join writing groups
a) Take a chapter along and get it critiqued by other writer. Remember though, this is only a critique to get an overview on what the public may or may not say about the story. A professional editor is a must.
(Look at where you were; where are you now and where do you want to be)
a) WHERE WE WERE. Shaun, my husband was a key element in the release of my novel – twice. Once with a self-publisher that never took it anywhere. Now that was a learning experience for us. (That’s another story for another day.) And he was instrumental in publishing the same novel under our own company, Butterfly Kiss Books.
b) WHERE WE ARE. We licking our wounds and started again. The road we should have traveled in the first instance. However, being an author is a learning experience and unless we share, like now, how does one ever know which road to take. And believe you me there are many to choose from.
*REGISTER publishing company and purchase domain name.
*UPDATE website. Give it a modern makeover with colors that attract the age you target. (Designed by Shaun Behan)
*NEW IMPROVE COVER to highlight series. (Designed by Book Cover Café)
*EBOOK VERSES PAPERBACK Decision made to release as eBook first. (Brick and mortar book stores don’t take indie novels so why pay extra to have it comply.) Focus for us will be to use funds to publish Book 2 first.
*CHOOSE AN ONLINE BOOKSTORE We chose Amazon exclusively to receive the 5 day free, every 3 months option. (thought process was to put novel up FREE to launch the new series – 3 days only.)
*LAUNCHED and it was a SUCCESS. That weekend there were 58,000 novels Free on Amazon. Our sales were so good; we hit No 11 in the fantasy genre. Wahoo!!! We were wrapped. That decision we anguished over to go it alone, the worry and fears all went away. This was beyond all our expectations. The author’s novels above mine, had 5 or more books previously released and already had an established fan base. Therefore to be up at their level was worth every sleepless night.
*HOW DID WE DO IT? We advertised through Linked In, Twitter, Facebook and in the many groups in my portfolio. We watched the sales data. During the night while Australia slept, the UK and other countries brought up big. The trick was to advertise through all channels before we went to bed and in the morning we woke with joy at the sales that had clicked over.
*ISSUES. When you set up the promo, remember it is set on Eastern Standard Time. 12+ hours delay if you live here in Aus.
*BOOK LAUNCH. Facebook was the venue and was so much more successful than the first launch when it release 12 months prior. Maybe not the personal touch, but we had competitions and giveaways and just as much fun. Many who didn’t want others to see what they were saying popped up in private boxes and at one stage I couldn’t stop laughing I got so mixed up with who was saying what and who I should answer first. This is a must for everyone to try. I guarantee the only real cost is your time and I gave that and happily.
c) WHERE WE WANT TO BE. My new novel to this series will be released in the next month and I can’t wait.
*Series COVER has been completed. (Designed by Book Cover Café)
*Series TRAILER (Designed by Shaun Behan. He did trailer for Cloud Riders and has done others now so look forward to what he will produce for the series.)
*Facebook LAUNCH is a must.
*Series BANNER, a great tool. It says who you are about when you give a talk or showcase your book.
*Series BOOKMARKS. FREE advertising handouts.
*In 6 MONTHS will have both eBooks available in paperback and this is a money issue more than choice.
*In 12 MONTHS will have the third book released (5 to the series and all been written).
a) Keep growing your portfolio.
*BLOG/ write up your experiences for others to use as a guide.
*BUILD friends on Linked In, Twitter and on professional Facebook page.
*If you want to SELL your book you need READERS. It is my experience that other authors and writers will support you, but very few will buy or read your book. Attract readers to your portfolio by the posts you write.
*ENTER COMPETITIONS with your short stories or writings.
*RUN your own competitions from your own website.
*SUPPORT your local authors/ writers groups.
